Getting Ready For Field Day

[UPDATED 6/20/2013]

Field Day Planning Meeting Minutes by: WBØRUR

The Noise Blankers Radio Group held their first and only Field Day 2013 planning meeting at 12 noon, Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Smokin’ Joe’s BBQ in Bentonville, Arkansas. The record will reflect that this meeting is being held 48 hours prior to the Field Day event.

Roll call was taken. In attendance: Gary, WB0RUR; Andy, K5PO; Kevin, K5KVN; Steve, K5OY

Not present: Nathan K5KAC, who is still recovering from eating a container full of bacteria-laden lunch meat several days earlier.

The meeting was called to order: Two members opted for burgers; two opted for variations on smoked chicken. Three members had regular tea; one had sweet tea.  Jokes were made about “wet chicken” followed by a short discussion regarding the positive attributes of regular versus sweet tea.

Field Day discussions began with WB0RUR indicating that he will go to K5KVN’s residence this evening to “check out his rig.” This was met with curious looks from the other two members wondering if this was a euphemism. IT IS NOT AND CUT THAT OUT.

K5PO and K5KVN have taken the lead on early preparations and everything seems to be in order thanks to the due diligence of these two members. They may receive recognition at the next club meeting for their efforts; BUT PROBABLY NOT.

K5PO led the discussion on last-minute needs. This included the topics of folding chairs, a brief overview of antenna/transceiver combinations, operator schedules and that it was really funny that some people thought our Dayton Hamvention Ham Hijinks stories were real. THEY WERE NOT.

This year, the Noise Blankers will inaugurate the callsign WR5P and there was much discussion regarding SSB phonetics for identification.  A final decision was not reached. Top contenders include:

1)    We Ruined 5 Pair (of Underwear)
2)    We Requested 5 Prostitutes
3)    Who Removed 5 Parsnips
4)    Willie Repeated 5 Performances

For obvious reasons, none of these received a majority of votes. OBVIOUSLY.

The Noise Blankers will be providing a live video feed of the operating positions again this year via the Noise Blankers HAM-CAM.  Throughout the course of Field Day 2013 there will be regularly scheduled “HAM-CAM” events, such as topless hour and “look we’re all barefoot” hour. All present indicated eager anticipation for the “Australian Crawl” bonus multiplier (see the Ham Hijinks story here.)

The meeting ended with agreement that we had no more idea of what we are doing now than before we started.  However, we will enjoy ourselves immensely.

The final piece of business took place when Kevin K5KVN  presented Steve K5OY with his official Noise Blankers club t-shirt (see photo).  Steve would have received this shirt last year when we activated Horseshoe Island in Beaver Lake. BUT HE DIDN’T SHOW UP.

The meeting was adjourned.

A Rundown of Our #FD13 Plans

Like many of you, our field day operations are part contest and part promotion. We use the event to hone contesting skills, use alternative power, try new gear/techniques and promote the hobby we love.

Ham Radio Field Day 2013

Kevin K5KVN, an Alderman on the city council of Elm Springs, Arkansas, secured an “Amateur Radio Day” proclamation for the city. Read it here [PDF]. Ask your mayor to do a proclamation. It’s easy!

Here is a rundown of our plans:

  • Operating WR5P (for the very first time!) as category 2E from the shack of K5PO.
  • Once again, the wildly popular live webcam in the shack! We will feed rig audio to the webcam, too.
  • Photos uploaded throughout the event in our photo gallery.
  • Videos uploaded to our YouTube channel.
  • Real-time info on our various Twitter handles, using hashtag #FD13.
  • As for anything else: we’ll wing it.

What are you doing for field day? Tell us in the comments below.

If you are in Northwest Arkansas, you can also experience field day with ARKAN, the Benton County Radio Operators and the University of Arkansas club.

Ham Hijinks Covered Dayton

The Ham Hijinks news team was very busy during the Dayton Hamvention making up news stories about the biggest ham radio event of the year. Those of you that stopped by to read and comment on the stories, we thank you. To those of you that thought the restroom story was real and called/emailed Dayton officials about it, we’re still shaking our heads.

In case you missed it, you can read all of our Dayton coverage here.

What People Searched For, Installment #1

It’s time for the first installment of “What People Searched For To Get To Noiseblankers.com”

The data is real, and we believe it to be the true pulse of amateur radio today. And now, we give you a random list of actual search terms used to get to noiseblankers.com in the past week, with some speculation thrown in for good measure:

  • lady ham-radios yl on the air videos (We have some single guys in the club, so this may be our own fault. Likely, though, the searchers were looking for this article.)
  • what happened to 14.313 (We can go on and on about what happened to that frequency. But, we think folks probably found this story or this one.)
  • special mother in law (Don’t we all have special mother-in-laws? This guy has one special enough to do a special event.)
  • ham operator hit (Is this related to the Ham Radio Mafia mentioned here?)
  • hamradio catcall (See bullet point #1)

Happy searching! We hope you enjoy the site.  – 73 de K5KVN –

Noise Blankers Win Something; First Thought To Be Prank Call

(Not the actual trophy awarded to The Noise Blankers)

NORTHWEST Ark.; April 9, 2013 — Today the ARRL announced The Noise Blankers Radio Group won 2nd place in the 2013 QST Video Contest. Kevin K5KVN submitted our video from the K5H Horseshoe Island Activation and the club was quite surprised that the League thought it was good.

“This is a highly unusual thing for us, as we’ve only received ‘participation’ ribbons for most everything we’ve ever done in life,” said Noise Blankers President Gary WBØRUR. “I’m embarrassed to say that Kevin hung up on the ARRL the first time they called, assuming that anyone wanting to give us an award must be a prank caller.”

And here is the award-winning video:

UPDATE: We made it into the June 2013 QST! Here’s what it looks like on page 46. That’s K5PO in the green shirt.

Our Frolic In Fort Smith

By WBØRUR

This past weekend, the Noise Blankers Radio Group traveled to the “Hanging Judge Hamfest” in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Club members present at the event were Gary WBØRUR, Andy K5PO, Kevin K5KVN and Nathan K5KAC.  Kevin brought a harmonic on the trip.

After several miles of travel, it was determined that Steve K5OY was not present in the vehicle. It was only then we realized no one invited him. This is an unfortunate oversight and in no way is to be considered an indicator of his merits.

There was lively conversation on the trip to the event, most of which cannot be published and is best forgotten by those who heard it.

Once arriving at the Knights of Columbus Hall (a junior version of the Knights Templar – but doesn’t have the responsibility of protecting the Holy Grail), we paid our admission fees and entered the hamfest. Unfortunately, not very many sellers did the same thing. We were met by quite a few open and vacant tables.

Some new equipment vendors did a brisk business, perhaps because of the lack of “swap meet” sellers. A special Noise Blankers “thumbs up” to The Main Trading Company and Associated Radio for displaying a wide array of products ranging from cables and accessories to top-end HF transceivers.

On the positive side, we recognized several hams at the event.  On the negative side, we recognized several hams at the event.

There were a few purchases made by our group, but only those of a minor nature.  The largest order of business was picking up an amplifier previously purchased by WBØRUR – who was too cheap to pay for the shipping and opted to pick it up from the dealer at the hamfest.

The highlight of the hamfest was when the public address system malfunctioned.  Several times, it blasted 65 decibels of static-laden white noise over the in-house speaker system. After this cacophony repeated continuously, several older gentlemen began yelling “TURN IT OFF!  TURN IT OFF!” It made your ears ring for several minutes afterward.

There was an ARRL forum, but we’re not exactly sure who attended, if anyone. Surely someone did.

Lunch was at George’s Restaurant – an iconic Fort Smith lunch place with great service and food served with a side order of cholesterol meds. It should be noted that Fred ate at Dead Lobster, although that cannot be independently verified at this time.

Summary:

  • The Hanging Judge Hamfest was having an off-year.
  • The number of vendors was down. It appears that the number of attendees was lower, too.
  • Noticeably absent was the fellow with the comb-over hair who sells components at every hamfest. (He must have been at a different event with actual attendance.)

HAMFEST SCORE:  5 out of 10

The Noise Blankers Go To Green Country

The Green Country Hamfest in Claremore, Oklahoma, is one of the best hamfests in the region. It has a large venue, good forums and is well-attended. This year, there seemed to be fewer tables and we’re hoping that’s not a trend. Claremore is a 1.5 hour drive from our part of Northwest Arkansas, so it’s an easy trip. It’s become an annual trek for us, as has going to the Joplin and Ft. Smith hamfests.

This year, we enjoyed the company of Bill KØDEW and Mike WB9M. They are putting on the ARRL Midwest Division Convention in Lebanon, Mo., on November 8 & 9, 2013. Nathan KF5OQB (soon to be K5KAC) joined us, as well.

Sensing a good promotional opportunity, we took these Ham Hijinks flyers with us and dropped them on the entrance table. It remains unclear if anyone actually picked one up.

Some observations:

  • The spurrious emissions coming from the men’s restrooms were quite impressive. They really should put a door on that facility.
  • Fist bumping the chocolate fountain at Golden Corral is frowned upon. We were, however, very impressed with the mil-spec heavy-duty sneeze guard in front of the fountain.
  • Bill and Mike each bought weather stations.
  • Nathan purchased what we think is either a big heat sink or a VHF amp of some sort. It wasn’t labled, but it was CHEAP! It has a really neat-sounding throw switch. We’re not sure what the switch does (it wasn’t labeled, either).
  • Once again, no one in our group won a door prize.

It was truly an epic ham radio day – we went to a hamfest, had lunch at a Golden Corral and one person in our group was recovering from surgery. That’s how it’s done.

HAMFEST SCORE:  9 out of 10 *
*Score would be a 10 if we had won a door prize. Keep that in mind for next year, Green Country.

Check out that mil-spec sneeze guard!

March Meeting Minutes

The Noise Blankers Radio Group met on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Buffalo Wild Wings in Rogers, Arkansas.

Present were: WBØRUR, K5KVN, K5PO and K5OY. The meeting was called to order by WBØRUR. Then:

  • WBØRUR ordered 12 traditional wings, traditional sauce, and french fries. He showered after the meeting.
  • K5KVN ordered a chicken wrap and reported that he felt healthy as a result.
  • K5PO ordered a dozen traditional wings, half chipotle BBQ and half jammin’ jalapeno. He spent 10 minutes after the meeting washing his hands.
  • K5OY ordered 12 boneless wings, mild sauce, but received hot sauce. He excused himself from the table three times to towel off in the restroom.

(The record should reflect that K5OY also ordered a vegetable boat, which in no way offset the caloric intake of the boneless wings.)

The meeting immediately adjourned and the membership entered into “social hour.”
